Updated Chrome App for iOS Gets Material Design

18 February 2015

Milan: Material design is something that creates a visual language by synthesizing classic principles of good design along with the innovation of technology. It builds a single underlying system that offers a unified experience across several platforms and device sizes. Here the mobile precepts are fundamental while the voice, touch, keyboard and mouse are the first class input methods.

Specialities of Material Design:

  • Google’s mobile web browser, Chrome gets the ‘Material Design’ look with its latest update of the application for iPhone and iPad users. Google’s new design motif which has been introduced with the latest Android version is meant to offer universal look and feel for Google’s mobile platform and services irrespective of the device being used.
  • Material design includes a variety of animations, solid flat colours, shadows and some other things which suggest the depth. The emphasis on bright colours and the interactions are meant to suggest the real word physics. Till now, Google has rolled out a few updates related to ‘Material design’ to number of its mobile properties including search app, maps app and the YouTube app to name a few.

Material Design for iOS:

  • The update of Material Design for Chrome browser was already live for Android devices but now, its arrival for iOS devices will certainly be a remarkable change for Apple owners. This new look brings fluid motion, bold graphics and tactile surfaces to the application. In the new version of chrome, the tabs are laid out over a black background; the top left of the screen features a ‘+’ button which lets you launch a new tab. You can also find a tab switcher and menu on the top right corner of the screen while at the bottom you can tap to view the favourites or the history.
  • In addition to all these features, the app update comprises a couple of other improvements as well such as iOS 8 optimizations and support for higher end phones. One of the most useful features is that the support for ‘handoff”; it lets you start a session on iOS 8 and then switch over to OS X Yosemite to continue.

Features to come in the new update:

  • One important thing which is yet to come is that the Chrome doesn’t support faster Nitro JavaScript engine yet. Users feel it much slower than Safari on JavaScript heavy pages. Usually Apple doesn’t allow browser makers to have their own rendering engines in iOS, but they mandate the likes of Chrome and Opera to use the Safari Webkit engine instead.
  • But the third party applications were allowed to use Nitro in iOS 8 where the feature is obviously dependant on developer support. The features of updated Chrome are nice, but it would be too good if the Google takes the advantage of free speed booster rather than later.
